Overcoming One of ADHD’s Blind Spots

I have talked about Now/Not now thinking as an ADHDer. One of the ways this affects me is that things can sneak up on me if I don’t intentionally keep an eye on the passing of time, particularly for things I need to prepare for and if there are multiple stages to this.

I use Miro a lot to visualise things for myself as well as with others. Here is my board to keep an eye on what is coming up.

A table of sticky notes in Miro. Monday to Sunday along the top, Week number down the side with an additional sticky showing thew month start for the weeks where that applies. Within the table are the events I need to be aware of the passing of time towards on different coloured stickies. Colours Black sticky with white writing — in the past, yellow — not planned for yet, green — ticket bought/booked, Blue — me local hospital, GP etc, pink — Mum appointments, purple — dad appointments, red — par

Within the table are the events I need to be aware of the passing of time towards.

  • Black sticky with white writing — in the past,
  • yellow — not planned for yet,
  • green — ticket bought/booked,
  • blue — me local hospital, GP etc,
  • pink — Mum appointments,
  • purple — dad appointments,
  • red — parents (mainly maintenance etc)
  • bright blue — a week long focus.

It is really helpful for me to look at every now and then and works better for this purpose than my full calendar which has lots of small things in it too. Actually setting up the next month and adding the events really helps me to understand the time between the events as well and to think about the viability of some of the things I would like to do.

Again, this board is for visualising the passing of time and ensuring that I am planning ahead far enough, that I am not booking things on the same day in different places and that I am not over-reaching e.g. Travel to Leeds and then have an event somewhere else a couple of days later. My calendar is the one source of truth for where I need to be and what I need to be doing.

My original design was based on items moving from idea through planning to ready and then current but it was difficult to operate and I already use a Kanban tool for my tasks and projects so I changed to the calendar view which is much more effective for me.

Three concentric circles with ideas outside, planning, ready and current from outside circle to inside. On the left is a key showing the colours used for week due on the tasks. In the circles are a number of events and tasks e.g. Feb-Apr VAT return is in planning.

How do you keep track of things coming up?
